Review: Triangle

Triangle is written by fellow Canadian Lance Biggums, and the target audience seems to be young, college aged men. I’m not that. But I did find it entertaining. A quick read, witty, and somewhat fun. I’m a bit confused as to why it’s considered a love “triangle” - I think of Jules et Jim, where all three are participating in the “triangle”, or at least in the know… but I guess that doesn’t have to be the case. In this case, Aron certainly doesn’t know about Brad, until it’s far too late.

 

Anyway, be that as it may, the book itself is well written and the story does hold one’s attention. I just didn’t feel love for any of the characters. At all. They’re all sort of reprehensible human beings. If this is what modern dating is like, leave me out! God, I sound old. But truly, these are not good people. None of them are horrible, except perhaps Brad, but certainly not likable. Stacy is vacuous and greedy, even Anita doesn’t stick to her feminist views in the end, Aron is just manipulative and passive aggressive, and we really don’t get to know Marlon the narrator, except that he’s a big gossip. I’m curious why he was so curious about these people?

 

I did want to see what happened in the end, more out of morbid curiosity than anything, but certainly not because I cared about what happened to any of the characters. I kept hoping for some relief, some sort of plot twist that would show at least one of them to be good-hearted. But no. It could just be that I’m an old, crotchety female and not the target audience at all. The writing is certainly good - well-paced and humorous. I would read more of Biggums’ work. So… I give Triangle a sort of half-hearted thumbs up.
