Poetry: Selections from Harker Jones

Nature Boys

his voice, raspy
sears my retinas

his rough hands
his musky throat
his crooked teeth

russet eyes burn the dark
searching the sky for meaning,
or a soft place to fall

tentacles of light
reach through a violet twilight
hunger rapacious

Reprisal

He didn’t come,
the love of my life

So I created him

I gave him money and beauty
and kindness
and soulfulness

I gave him love
Undying, forever love
Enviable, once-in-a-lifetime love
Exceptional, extraordinary love

And then I took it away

He didn’t come
the love of my life

So I created him

and then I destroyed him
